Conference — SAP Financials March 2012 (Las Vegas)
Presented by Tammy Fraley, Alta Via Senior Consultant
Tammy Fraley will present two sessions at this year's SAP Financial 2012 Conference in Las Vegas, under the Finance in the Public Sector (Track 14).
Session One Date/Time: March 15th 8:30a - 9:45a Pacific
Best practices for using an advanced management costing process along with budgeting in the public sector — Learn how to concurrently use SAP Funding Management with SAP controlling cost management functionality to provide your organization with a comprehensive picture of not only the amount of funding it has received, but also how much it is truly costing you to provide a service or product. Hear firsthand how to utilize various SAP controlling advanced costing functionalities to provide valuable information to your CFO as well as to meet the costing requirements noted in the President's Management Agenda. Understand how SAP master data objects can be used to ensure all funding information is captured within the financial system. Receive some valuable lessons learned on how to unravel the accounting string of legacy public sector accounting systems into separate objects that may then not require smart coding for master data. Take home a project timeline and team composition that you can use to guide your organization's implementation of new master data elements and advanced costing functionality.
Session Two Date/Time: March 15th 4:00p - 5:15p Pacific
Tips for using activity-based costing for calculating the cost-to-serve for the public sector — Understanding the cost-to-serve in the public sector is critical when dealing with tight margins, constrained resources, and budgetary reductions. Critical in public sector is the ability to determine the cost-to-serve and this requires a strategy beyond peanut butter spreading. It must incorporate understanding the real performance costs through an understanding of resource and activity drivers. Learn how you can better understand and support your service costs using activity-based and resource-based costing concepts with the SAP controlling module and other SAP tools. Get a firsthand look at how to use activity-based costing functionality to identify process inefficiencies that could be driving up costs, such as the cost of technology and real estate and the impact on the amount charged to provide service to both internal and external customers. See how to improve individual processes as well as entire process chains, including resource allocations. Learn how to incorporate change management strategies to move your business from a transactional-based system to a true decision making tool. Get a real life example of how shared-support leaders can get an understanding of the service they provide and the cost involved through standard controlling functionality and advanced capabilities, such as templates.

Alta Via’s Sponsored Webcast Provided Excellent Forum for RCA Q&A’s
Resource Consumption Accounting: Linking Operations and Finance to Drive Business Performance webinar held July 16 was well received and provided an excellent opportunity for thoughtful questions asked by participants in the Q&A portion of the webcast. According to Larry White, Executive Director for the RCA Institute, “The webcast with MESA demonstrated the need by operations managers for greater insights and participation into the determination of costs in their organization”. Mr. White elaborated, “Too often, cost information is based on information for GAAP financial statements, which simply aren't designed to meet the decision making needs of managers inside an organization”. A transcript of the Q&A’s, answered by Larry White, Wolfgang Doeller from macs Controlling™ and Mark Arrieri, Controller, US Technical Products from Neenah Paper, offers valuable insight and is provided courtesy of the RCA Institute. In this web-based document, the Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) committee members have recognized and cited Resource Consumption Accounting (RCA) as one of the key ways to help organizations “improve their understanding of environmental (and social) costs through their costing systems and models”. The RCA reference can be found under the sub-heading Improving Information Flows to Support Decisions under the Internal Management area of the Framework. July 16, 2009 Webcast - Resource Consumption Accounting: Linking Operations and Finance to Drive Business Performance
Alta Via Consulting, webinar sponsor and the RCA Institute is working with MESA (Manufacturing Enterprise and Systems Association) to demonstrate the benefits of how RCA can link operational metrics-to-financial ERP data. Resource Consumption Accounting: Linking Operations and Finance to Drive Business Performance is the focus of this webinar and the experience and results that Neenah Paper has achieved by implementing RCA that subsequently enhanced its operational and business decision support capabilities for their production and support processes. Neenah installed a new ERP system which met their external reporting needs; however, it did not offer visibility into their manufacturing costs, or product / client profitability. This webinar identifies the root cause of the problem that exists between financial and operational metrics. There is no cost to attend this event but online registration is required prior to the webcast.
